This was the Borghese family’s first chapel in Rome, in the great church of Trinita’ dei Monti. Not much remains visible of the original late sixteenth-century decoration, by Cesare Nebbia, but the family crests are visible on the pilasters. The original altarpiece has been substituted by this plaster cast of a Pieta’ from Muenster cathedral. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

The Trinita dei Monti Church in Rome was initially established by King Charles VIII of France. He was grateful to St. Francis of Paola for assisting his dying father, Louis XI.

In admiration of the monk’s holiness, he had a small convent and church built on Pincian Hill. The church was dedicated to the Most Holy Trinity.

During the Sack of Rome (1527), the church was still unfinished. It was finally completed in 1584, when the twin bell towers with octagonal cupolas, by Antonio Ruspoli were constructed.  The double flight of stairs was constructed by Domenico Fontana.

The church overlooks the Piazza de Spagna. The facade is by Carlo Moderno. Pilasters divide the church into three bays. I love the view of the domes of Rome from the top of the Spanish Steps. This “Scalinata” is the widest staircase in Europe.

The vault and lunettes have scenes from the life of the Virgin by Perin del Vaga.

There is a beautiful painting of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

There are many beautiful frescoes inside the church. I love the “Coronation of the Virgin” by Federico Zuccari.

The Main Altar of Trinita dei Monti in RomeLook for the map inside the church that describes the artwork in the chapels. The altar has a painting of the “Sacred Heart of Jesus.” The Sacred Heart  is one of the most famous religious devotions to Jesus’ physical heart as the representation of his divine love for humanity. Dr. EveAnn Lovero writes Travel Guides @ http://www.vino-con-vista.com Trinita dei Monti in Rome “Sacred Heart of Jesus”
