12 Years a Slave has been nominated for many Academy Award this year including Best Picture. It is an epic drama film adaptation of an 1853 memoir of Solomon Norhtrup who worked on plantations in Louisiana.

If  you are in New Orleans and want to experience  antebellum Louisiana, drive to Destrehan Plantation on the Mississippi River. Some scenes from the movie were shot here.

You will find spectacular oak trees draped in Spanish Moss and lavish interiors filled with antiques. There are former slave quarters to visit on the property.

You can also visit the San Francisco Plantation and Houmas House Plantation and Gardens. They are both relatively close to New Orleans.
