In Every year, California’s renowned Napa Valley Vintners Association schedules a 3 day Premier Napa Valley wine extravaganza and auction. On Thursday and Friday, there are preview parties hosted by vintners throughout the valley. On Friday, there is a multi-vintage Perspective and Retrospective tastings at the Rudd Center at the Culinary Institute.

The Premier Collection is one of the rarest wine brands in the world! For years, “the region’s top winemakers have offered ultra-boutique wines to the trade, crafted in as few as 60 bottles per lot and never more than 240 bottles.  Small, hand-crafted lots provide unique expressions of Napa Valley’s consistent quality, diverse terrain and winemaking talents.”

I attended a Wine Writers Symposium at Meadowood and I was able to attend the Premier Napa Festivities. Here’s a video of the Symposium that I attended: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpYSh-h5MEY

On Saturday afternoon before the auction, you can taste and network with owners and winemakers from 225 Napa Valley producers. Then you can have lunch at the CIA and bid on one of the wines that you have tasted at a live auction from 1-4 pm. To follow the action on Twitter use #PNV14.

WHERE: Culinary Institute of America at Greystone 2555 Main Street, St. Helena

WHEN: On February, 22, 2014;

9 am -4 pm

Premiere Napa Valley ultra-premium wine lots will be sold. The portfolio can be viewed at premierenapawines.com.

During the 4.5 hours of bidding, Los Angeles retailer The Wine House, bid up 5 cases of 2012 Scarecrow Lot # 210,  Cabernet Sauvignon called “Toto’s Opium Dream” which sold for $260,000; almost $4500 per bottle! The 100-percent Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from vines planted in 1945 was made by Celia Welch. Lots from Shafer Vineyards and Schrader also set new auction records. Brother Timothy would have been beaming with pride as the Napa Valley wineries were propelled into the stratosphere!

Even inaugural lots were soaring. “Favia Erickson Winegrowers, the partnership between husband-and-wife team Annie Favia and Andy Erickson, fared as well as veterans, hauling in $50,000 for its inaugural lot, 120 bottles of a 50-50 blend of Coombsville Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon called The Century Egg, the couple’s play on a Chinese delicacy.”

According to industry analysts here are the top lots:

“The top lots in order were: Scarecrow Wine (5 cases); Schrader (5 cases); Shafer Vineyards (5 cases); ZD Wines (5 cases); Robert Mondavi Winery (20 cases); Cakebread Cellars (20 cases); a joint lot between Bevan Cellars and Château Boswell (10 cases); Vine Hill Ranch (5 cases); a joint lot between Constant, David Arthur Vineyards and Reynolds Family Winery (20 cases); Silver Oak Cellars (20 cases); Joseph Phelps Vineyards (5 cases); and Brand (5 cases).”
