Wine regions of Spain with denominación de origen (DO & DOCa) in 2008. The map is based in municipalities’ borders. The DO Catalunya and the DO Cava are not shown, as their zones of production are superimposed on other DO regions. The Vino de Calidad Valles de Benavente (QWpsr), which had not reached DO status yet, and the Vinos de Pago, are not shown either. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

1. Rioja is bordered by mountains on the north and south.

Rioja is made from grapes grown from La Rioja, as well as,  Navarre and the Basque province of Álava.

Rioja is sub-divided into three sub-regions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Baja and Rioja Alavesa.  Alta has the most historic wineries. Visit Old Town for fabulous tapas!

2. Ribera Del Duero is one of Europe’s highest altitude wine regions. It is one of the wine regions along the Duero River.

Ribera del Duero is home to the world-famous and highly-prized Emilio Moro, Valderiz, Vega Sicilia and Tinto Pesquera wines. It is dominated by production of red wine from the Tempranillo grape.”
