The Catholic Church has two new saints today. On Sunday, April 27, 2014,  Pope Francis presided over the Holy Mass for the canonization of the blessed John XXIII and John Paul II at the Vatican. This was the first  Dual Papal Canonization. Pope Emeritus Benedict attended the historic double canonization.  800,000 people attended the historic event in Vatican City.

Pope John Paul II was be beatified on May 1, 2011 by Pope Benedict XVI on the day of the Feast of Divine Mercy. Watch the details of the event @

His coffin will be exhumed from the crypt and placed in front of the altar  in  St. Peter’s Basilica for the celebration.

Beatification is catholism’s highest honor and the penultimate act that will put him on the path to sainthood. This honor is bestowed for recognition of living a saintly life. This will be the first time that a pope has been beatified by his immediate successor. To learn the details of his beatification process go to http://www.radiovaticana.org/EN1/Articolo.asp?c=454138. This Vatican Radio Site details the “Decree of the Beatification of the Servant of God John Paul II.”

John Paul II, the Polish pontiff, was born in Wadowice Poland in 1920. His name was Karol Wojtyla and he was the youngest pope in 125 years. The Diosese of Rome launched a website dedicated to his canonization and beatification @ www.karol-wojtyla.org.

During his 26 year papacy he survived an asassination attempt in St. Peter’s Square in 1981. He died on April 2, 2005 at the age of 84 after suffering from Parkinson’s Disease for many years. “He authored more encyclical letters, apoltolic exhortations, constitutions and letters than any other pope in the 2000 year history of the Christian Church.”

To be beatified, you must perform a miracle. The miracle that was attributed to him was that a French nun by the name of Sister Marie Simon-Pierre’s miraculously recovered from Parkinson’s Disease  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bw5hwOcYR30. He must perform another  miracle before he can be canonized.
